First Hike: How to Pick the Right Trail

A calm way to choose a route that fits your time, comfort, and current conditions.

A sunlit path winding through tall green trees

The best first hike is one you can finish with energy left to enjoy the view. Distance matters, but elevation, terrain, heat, and daylight can change how a route feels.

Read the whole route description

Use an official park or land-manager source. Look for total distance, elevation gain, trail surface, closures, water availability, and whether the route is clearly marked.

Choose a turnaround time

Decide when you will turn back even if you have not reached the planned viewpoint. Save the route offline when possible, carry water, and give someone your plan.

Make the next hike easier

Notice what felt comfortable and what you wished you had packed. That short note is more useful than chasing someone else's pace.
