Beginner Camping Checklist: Keep It Light

The small set of essentials that makes a first camping trip comfortable without overpacking.

Your first camping setup only needs to keep you dry, warm enough, fed, and able to see after dark. Start with a reservable campground close to home so changing the plan is easy.

Sleep and shelter

Bring a tent sized for your group, a ground layer, sleeping bags appropriate for the forecast, and simple sleeping pads. Practice pitching the tent once before the trip.

Food and light

Plan uncomplicated meals, store food according to campground rules, and bring a headlamp for each person. Keep water and a backup snack easy to reach.

The final check

Confirm fire restrictions, quiet hours, wildlife guidance, and the forecast with the campground. Leave the site as clean as—or cleaner than—you found it.
